From Bambinis to Men's Teams: The Right Ball Size for Every Handball League
There’s no question: The size and weight of the ball must match the players. That’s why there are official guidelines for handball sizes based on different age groups. Different sizes are also prescribed for men's and women's teams.
Kempa Handballs in Sizes 0 and 00: Perfect for Bambinis and Minis
Size 00 for handballs is not officially regulated. However, these are generally very light and small balls, ideal for preschool and early elementary school children. This allows young handball players to develop their skills with appropriately sized balls. At this stage, everything is about fun and movement, so there are no strict regulations. Size 0 handballs are intended for elementary school children. The Minis or F-youth, aged 6 to 8, play with balls that weigh less than 260g. The circumference of 46 – 48 cm is adapted to small hands.
Kempa Handballs in Size 1: The Right Choice for Youth Handball
For players in youth teams, handballs in size 1 are used. There is a distinction by gender: Girls aged 8 – 14 use this ball size, covering female C-, D-, and E-youth. Boys use size 1 handballs only from 8 – 12 years old (Male D and E-youth). Size 1 balls have a circumference of 50 – 52 cm and a weight of 290 – 330g.
Kempa Handballs in Size 2: Used by Women's Teams and Older Male Youth Teams
Size 2 balls have a circumference of 54 – 56 cm and weigh between 325 – 375g. Women’s teams from age 14 and up, including senior women’s leagues, use this size. In male youth handball, size 2 balls are used for C- and B-youth teams, covering players aged 12 – 16.
Handballs in Size 3: The Official Ball for Men Aged 16 and Older
For men's teams and the male A-youth, size 3 handballs are officially prescribed. These handballs are exclusively for players aged 16 and older. With a circumference of 58 - 60 cm and a weight of 425 – 475g, size 3 handballs are the largest used in training and matches.
